Critical care : nurses on the frontline of Australia's AIDS crisis by
HIV and AIDS devastated communities across Australia in the 1980s and 1990s. In the midst of this profound health crisis, nurses were caregivers and activists, both on and off the wards, and played a central role in shaping an innovative public health approach to a virus that was shrouded in fear and prejudice. Nurses worked with communities to develop public health campaigns, advocated for their patients and - through their unions - opposed the efforts of doctors and surgeons to introduce traditional public health measures based on ' test and contain' measures. Bringing together stories from across the country, historian Geraldine Fela documents the extraordinary care, compassion, and solidarity witnessed and experienced. Others shared painful memories of homophobia and prejudice, and some participated in unsettling and coercive aspects of Australia' s response to the virus. Together, their stories paint a vivid and nuanced picture of HIV and AIDS nursing and shed light on an unexamined aspect of Australia' s AIDS crisis.

Georgina Banks searches for the truth of what happened to her Great Aunt ' Bud' , killed in the Second World War.Bangka Strait, Indonesia, 1942. Allied ships are evacuating thousands in flight from Singapore, the island having fallen to Japanese Imperial forces. Facing terrifying assaults by fighter planes, one ship, the Vyner Brooke, is badly bombed and sinks. Its survivors swim or paddle for hours to the nearest land, a beach on Bangka Island, parched, many dreadfully injured.One of the survivors is Australian Army nurse Dorothy ' Bud' Elmes, the great-aunt of Georgina Banks. Bud makes it to the island, where she, colleagues and a matron tend to the wounded as a plan is formulated. But it is soon discovered the place is occupied by Japanese forces, and two days later they arrive on the beach.Seventy-five years on, Georgina receives an invitation to a memorial service for her great-aunt.

The ANMF (Vic Branch) librarian has secured limited access for members to the Public Health and Social Care resources in the Policy Commons database. This collection includes grey literature (not commercially published) not usually indexed in traditional health databases – for instance, research studies, case reports, policy statements, guidelines and manuals from healthcare organisations and official bodies including the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies and more. Members can access the collection until April 2025 by logging into the ANMF Education Portal (education.anmfvic.asn.au).
