Commonly cited resources for HERC students include the Code of conduct for nurses, the Code of ethics for nurses and the Enrolled nurse standards for practice.  HERC students should treat these professional standards as documents from a website with a group author for the purposes of APA referencing.  See Hints and Tips tab for working with Abbreviations.

  • The in-text citation points to the reference list entry, the reference list entry points to the original source.
  • Every time you refer to something you need to put a reference in to that something.  This means you can have multiple in-text citations to the same source.
  • No matter how many in-text citations you have to the same source, you only list it in the reference list once.
  • The author's last name and year of publication should always appear in the in-text citation.
  • Page numbers (or paragraph numbers for unpaginated sources) should be given for direct quotations.
  • The author can be a company, corporation or organisation.
    • If the organisation is known by an abbreviation, spell the name out in full the first time it is used and put the abbrevation in square brackets after it.  Thereafter you can use the abbreviation on its own to refer to the organisation.  Make sure you repeat this spelling the name out in full followed by the abbreviation in square brackets in your reference list entry.

e.g.

In-text citation:
